Insta360 X4: An Objective Technical Review

ADDITIONAL INFO: A few details got edited out of the review as I was trying to trim it down for time, so here are some additional notes: 1. Low light image quality is improved if you drop the video resolution down to 5.7 K /30, however, if I wanted 5.7 K videos I would have bought the X3 and saved some money. They market this as an 8K camera, so it should perform properly at 8K. 2. One of my be...
Viofo A139 Pro 3-Channel Dash Cam Review

Viofo sent me this early unit to test and review, but they had zero input in the contents of this review. I did not receive any compensation for the review other than getting the test unit. The Viofo A139 is a 4K dash cam with either a 1-channel, 2-channel, or 3-channel configuration where the interior and rear cameras are 1080p. I was very impressed with the quality of this dash cam, but I did...

Vantrue Element 1 (E1) Dash Cam Review

I was interested in testing out the Vantrue Element 1 (also known as the E1) dash camera because it appeared to be a full-featured, 2K dash camera that was small enough to possibly compete with the Garmin Mini 2. It's a fantastic, high quality dash camera with one critical flaw: parking mode. Unfortunately, Vantrue's parking mode implementation simply doesn't work. I'm hoping some of the issues...

    Nice video thankyou, I suffer with chronic lower back pain, nerves the lot, I take daily 2400mg gabapebtin (a life saver for nerves) and 200mg tramadol (a necessity I'm afraid), from the tramadol I now have amongst other side effects chronic migraines 4 to 5 days migraines 1 to 2 days off 🙄 permanently, for migraines I take naproxen which as the man says is fantastic for up to 24hrs but it's recommended by drs that you only take naproxen for no more than 15 days a month. I have been taking 200- 300mg tramadol and 2400-3600 gabapebtin for 20 years and I deal with my pain by laying down most of my time, today I bought a compression belt and we'll see if it works, I have a cheap strap that goes on my knee and stops the sciatica in it's tracks, I'll try and find it. Enjoy your day and good luck everyone 😊

      Once it has power it boots up and starts recording for as long as it has power. The only time that changes is if it goes into parking mode. In that case it only records when there is an impact.

    What size SD card do you recommend? I saw some info where an 8gb might be best because if you try to upload to your computer you don't have to upload such a large amount of 1 minute videos. Just curious what you think is best. Also, curious how many hours of video an 8gb card holds.

    • @BrianGreenstone
      @BrianGreenstone 10 днів тому

      @@WJSwift no, you want a bigger SD card so that it doesn’t go bad quickly. Those smaller cards are being constantly overwritten which means they will go bad very quickly. The larger the card the less frequently it gets rewritten over, therefore, the longer it will last. I believe I have 128MB and 256MB cards in my various dash cameras. After all these years I have only had one card ever go bad. All of the files are time stamped, so you don’t have to copy everything to your computer. You just copy a handful of files in the time range that you need.

    Parking guard requires a WiFi connection to alert you something happened hit your car. But I can’t find any information about how to provide a WiFi connection apart the phone which wouldn’t be in the car while you’re not in the car. Also I think parking guard is pretty dubious with a front-only camera. Most parking lot impacts will be to the rear and most parking lot vandalism would be on the side.

    • @BrianGreenstone
      @BrianGreenstone 10 днів тому

      Yes, it requires a Wi-Fi connection if you want to be notified immediately via the app, however, parking mode still works just fine without any Wi-Fi connection. It simply won’t notify you right away. You can use as many of these cameras in your car as you want to cover all angles including a rear camera. The app lets you group the cameras so it will act like a multi channel - camera. However, this is not a camera I would recommend Using in that way because it is more expensive to do so. For a multi channel camera you are better off getting a dedicated multi channel camera for a lot less money.

    Digital rearview mirror comment… I agree there’s no depth perception. However, I do frequently load the rear cargo up… My first time experience with this was when I was bringing helium mylar balloons to a party, and I could not see out the rear, though my surround view camera gave me more of a reference, when turning and navigating around in a cul-de-sac, I think it can be handy… but rarely needed. If you need to turn it on for a moment to reconfirm your surroundings if you happen to have your cargo area full to the ceiling! …guess it’s good to have this option in very rare scenarios.

    Wireless charging is horrible in this for iPhone. I have a ZAGG iPhone case as well as an other offbrand but expensive Simply Carbon Fiber case… Both of them, I have to keep repositioning them because after minutes it just blinks red. Also, if you put your keys, or anything else that is metal in there, it starts flashing red. I have to wonder if it’s doing damage to my keys by trying to send out some electric signal volt that they don’t recognize. I was trying to find an option to turn off wireless charging as I like to put my keys in the tray, but I can’t figure that one out because I don’t think it is an option. I would love to have a software upgrade to an off function for this or improve iPhone recognition so it doesn’t get mad when my keys or other electronic devices are sitting there not meant to be charged.

    Adaptive cruise control w/ lane assist. I am on the edge about. When lanes change from one to two lanes, it seems to not know which lane to go in but choses right lane. However, it often gives you the notice that it can’t adapt and wants to cancel out of this function… But as long as your hand is on the steering wheel it’ll put it in the right of two lanes, and it regains lane assist highlighted in green, at least in mine does in display cluster. I like to drive normal highways with my hand rested on my left leg and barely touching the steering wheel. Adaptive cruise control excels to do this. Cadillac Escalade requires eye focus, this one however, doesn’t. It really makes my five hour drives between LA and Monterey, very pleasant.

    Switching between hybrid modes advice… Unless you know you’re heading down a grade and want to put your 4XE in energy recovery mode (which it does automatically), or coast down with foot off gas and brake in electric mode …JUST KEEP IN HYBRID MODE!!,. I would come down the mountain in Yosemite on a full charge and get almost 75 miles of mostly electric range before my electric was gone. But if you’re constantly fighting the gas pedal around town, you will actually lose fuel economy. I’m a gadget guy so I love to switch between modes but honestly in the beginning when I got the 4xe jeep, I wish I just left it in hybrid, I got better gas mileage hybrid. In fact, I was only getting about 12 to 13 miles per gallon street doing my 50 mile a day city/highway trying to outthink jeep and switching modes during that driving. Once I left it in hybrid I was getting 15 or 16… to sum up comparison …I get an average of 17 or 18 avg in my V6 summit without the flawed 4XE… another reason I got out of that vehicle and got into my current one… The summit

  • @craigmeier
    @craigmeier 12 днів тому

    Another 4xE fuel consumption comparison to Summit six cylinder… My gas mileage is around 18 average the last 10,000 miles I drove the summit compared to the 10,000 miles I drove in the 4XE was barely getting 19 with a lot of Freeway miles both vehicles. To test street,I would reset the fuel economy gauge when I knew I had a week of driving around the city, and I was getting around 14 MPG in the V6 summit versus around the same 14 MPG, even lower sometimes 13 in the 4XE.

  • @craigmeier

    iPhone failed connection fix. Both of my 2023 Cherokees (2023 4xe base and Summit v6) would fail to connect or lose connection and literally I would have to wait a day for the vehicle’s computer to reset and decide to accept my CarPlay the next day… SO Turn your audio settings option to turn off when you turn off the vehicle. You Manually have to turn on the screen every time you start the car, But then it recognizes every time I’ve done this, and I haven’t had an error since. I discovered this on my own, didn’t find a forum! just from my own computer knowledge, a fresh restart is always a good start Point… Unfortunately, every time I get in, I have to press the button to start the screen, but connection has not failed even once since.

  • @craigmeier

    I enjoyed your video, was very comprehensive, I don't really need the parking mode as my car output socket has voltage only the engine is running so i think this will be the best choice for me. As for 2k resolution i find very useful for reading license plates as i was near hit at 60mph by a car which didn't give the right of way in an intersection that wasn't under camera surveillance, when i told that to a police crew they asked me for the license plate or at least a part of it and a make of the car in order to apprehend that driver (who ran away after i went off road because of him). So yes, reading license plates is important for me.

I know that standard advice for sharpness settings is to use low and maybe add sharpness in editing but with this camera and with all the AI stuff going on, low sharpness seems to throw away the 8k advantage as it loses details as well as sharpness. And details cannot be recovered once lost. Do you have any views on this?

      Yeah, I'm using the medium sharpness setting and then bumping it up in Final Cut Pro as a final step. It's definitely a little soft even in the medium setting.

    Awesome video! I just applied for my GMRS license today. I’m just curious, does that radio have voice prompts? In other words, does it talk at all? I’m visually impaired, and I’m trying to find an accessible GMRS radio. Thanks very much.

      Yes, there is a lady with a thick Chinese accent who announces the channels and menu options. However, I think on the newer units they changed the voice to someone else.

      @@BrianGreenstone awesome! Does this whole true for all ocean radios? I just received my GMRS license. That was pretty fast. Anyhow, thank you for any assistance. I really do appreciate it, and I’m very much looking forward to talking on GMRS frequencies.

      You don’t need to use the vault. It’s pretty useless. SD card all day.

    Any idea why the X3 can shoot in LOG, but the X4 can't?

    I totally enjoyed this technical video. I have never owned a 360 camera. I really wanted to like this, but with the resolution of the 360 video being only 2.5K I am not sure about this. Maybe when we can get a native 4K 360 resolution I will think about it.

    • @BrianGreenstone
      @BrianGreenstone 2 місяці тому

      This is probably as good as it gets because to get a cropped 4K movie out of a 360 image you’d need to record at close to 16K which is not practical. The file sizes would be astronomical, and no iPhone or computer would be able to handle it. Recording at 8K is about as high as makes practical sense.
